New Yorks then-governor Samuel J. Tilden was the driving forcethat resulted in the combining of the private Astor and Lenox libraries with a $ 2 million endowment and 15,000 volumes from the Tilden Trust to become the New York Public Library. The main branch of the library opened to the public on 23 May 1911.
